I attended the first training
session on Web 2.0 learning opportunities held from 09 July to 13 July 2012 which
was organized by the ACP-EU Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural
Cooperation (CTA) in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture, University
of Mauritius and the Food Agricultural Research Council (FARC).
The course was run by skillful
tutors namely Mr Kamlesh Boodhoo and Mr Sanjay Sembhoo and the facilitator was
Miss Nawsheen Hosenally. During the five day sessions, the different tools were
taught to us namely Wikis, Blogs, Google Docs, VoIP, Alerts and RSS amongst
others. I have been able to acquaint myself with the new tools and techniques. I
was able for example to subscribe easily to Web2fordevelopment, maisnet,
FOAblog, RSS feeds and create Googledoc document. I benefitted greatly from
hands-on experiences led by our tutors on the web 2.0 applications. What was
interesting also is that twice a day, thoughts and observations were written on
metacards and affixed on the wall. Cards were also affixed on democracy walls
representing five key issues: what I noticed, what I felt, what I discovered,
what I learnt and what I would suggest. The atmosphere during the training was
very convivial thanks to the tutors.
How the training will be beneficial to me?
I will use the web 2.0 tools to
create interactive lecture with my students. The tools will help alleviate my
lectures. For example, I will put my lecture on a wiki for students to add
information and videos. They will be interacting more with me and with each
other and will become the central part of the lecture. I will have more time for research as I can
keep track of my students’ work more easily. Blogs will allow students to
update me weekly with their progress by attaching relevant files for comment
and feedback. RSS feeds will for instance enable students to save time in their
work. The web 2.0 tools will for sure promote critical thinking for particular
learning activities which I will assign to them.
I now feel more confident on
using the tools. I strongly believe that everybody should select a web 2.0 tool
and match it with his or her needs.
